The Kukri Bootleggers took to the circuit one more time this summer at the Newquay Surf 7s.
The squad included such young Bootlegging talent as: Harvey Austin (recipient of the much coveted Bootlegger Award), Baba Ajisebutu, Tommy O’Flaherty, Chris Bailey and Tom Boot. Joining them were some more experienced players such as: James Oyedele, Will May, Chris Asembo and Mikey Oliver. Khrys Speed joined us with his flair, strength and exquisite step. He was a great asset to a fine squad.
We were bolstered by Sireli Naqelevuki, Fiji international and Exeter Chiefs star. His enthusiasm, experience and passion were a fantastic asset to our young squad and it was a real pleasure to have him become a Bootlegger.
We played a tough RAF side first up and showed some real promise, scoring some great tries in the process of winning. Second up we played the St Paul’s Pirates, who comprised mostly National 1 and 2 players. We scored two tries first up to lead the opposition 14-12 at half time. However the Pirates got the better of us in the second half to win. Our third game was against the Dirty Dogs. We won our last group match to qualify second in our group.
This unfortunately meant we had drawn the Army in the semis. The boys did brilliantly, but to no avail. The Army were impeccably organised and had an insatiable desire to win. We were knocked out in the semis; the boys played their hearts out!!
The final was St Paul’s Pirates vs Army 7s and the Army won in the last minute of play. I always have, and always will maintain the Newquay Surf 7s is the best weekend of the UK 7s calendar!
